too many hats.

First, off!

Thank you for tuning in. I’ve never really had a blog before, but I figured I may as well try it here while I’m feeling a bit of momentum to share my story. I think routine is important, so maybe I’ll try to post once a week (she said 2 months ago… lol).

I have a good friend who posts once a week on Sundays. It’s ironic that when I logged back in to work on this blog post, his latest post was about ‘complicated and simple’. And truly, I feel like I made this whole blog post thing.. complicated. Expecting to show up perfectly, when I think the practice will prevail perfection — no one wants a perfect blog. They want a human one. And that’s all I want, to show up authentically. Or as Shum mentions in his blog, effortlessly. I wanted this to be effortless, but I’m out of practice. So. I’ll take one step at a time. I’m here. You’re here. Thank you for being here.

When I started this post, I had just heard the news of Tad Carpenter retiring his SUNday SUNS project.
He of one of my favourite designer and artist. What an incredibly talented human being. He created a sun every Sunday, aptly naming the project SUNday SUNS. This project lasted 10 years and just ended a few Sundays ago. It was so profound and heartbreaking to see it come to an end, but what a beautiful and inspiring duration and series. He is truly incredible. Tad, if you’re reading this, I’m a big fan! HA!

OKAY! TOO MANY HATS.

Ha. Already distracted. This title of this post was created weeks ago with intention of writing about all the hats I wear and systems I’ve tried to adopt so that I find a better balance in my life between family, work, community, and life. The few paragraphs you see here were written right now. Today. (2 months ago…) And I am very proud to say, I wore too many hats today. I am working on it.

Mother ~ Partner ~ Designer ~ Administrator ~ Friend  Community Builder

Today, I woke up and got my kiddos ready for school. Started working around 9:15am. I began with sending off menu board designs to Seven Shores, a local cafe in Uptown Waterloo, and emailed their team to check in on written edits + pricing for these updated menu boards.

Followed by a review on the progress for THIS website (briepointer.ca). I wrote out a list of what I need to work on and what we need to update/change. A list of questions I have for my website genius Kate Christy (Folk Founded). She is a brilliant website builder. It has been so fun watching her brain work and solve complex problems. I love dreaming up design work for my clients, but myself? No. I’ve been building this website for YEARS. Since 2023, actually. I took it offline to ‘fix it’ and never even opened it again. Who does that? Designers do.

Anywho! Next. I had to book the podcast studio at Den1880. This is the coworking space that I work out of in Uptown Waterloo. It is GORGEOUS space. Absolutely jawdropping.

While coordinating that, I messaged my friend Ruchika to make sure we aligned on timing for the video recording she was hoping to do in the Podcast Studio. She and her partner Hardi have dreamed up this really cool idea to paint portraits of folks while asking them questions about life; who they are, and how they take up space in the world. Although, I loved the idea, I was definitely a bit nervous. Hehe.

Turns out about nothing! The recording went very well. We had so much fun and got to chat about so many special things for both of us. I should have known Ruchi would calm my nerves and make me feel so comfortable and at home. She is incredible.

After this, we went to Midnight Run in Uptown Waterloo to grab a quick coffee before I walked home. I quickly caught up with my partner, Mike, before we rode our bikes to pick our kiddos up from school.

From here, we biked part of the way home before splitting up. I had to go continue working while Mike and the kiddos were attending a playdate.

Once I got home, I got back to work sizing images for the case studies on this website. I figured if they are even just a variety of placeholders, it’ll be enough to see what the build-out of the website will look like (thank you again and again, Kate!!).

When Mike and the girls got home, we had leftovers for dinner.

And I just kept. working… because we’re trying to launch this website by July 1st. It’s June 25th. We’ve got work to do! And by we.. I mean me. I’ve gotta get these case studies up and DONE!

The kiddos showcased all of their cute little end of the school year artwork. Mike then got them to bed.

Now, I’m working on this blog post. Distraction? Procrastination? I’m not sure. I’d like to believe I just needed a little break. HA.

TOO. MANY. HATS. HA.
